Concert DVDs is a Brilliant Hustle | Fri Jun 11, 2021

Maybe I knew that recordings of concerts were sold to the public; maybe I just discovered it. Either way, it’s a brilliant hustle and to earn more dollars for repackaged content.

Consider the fans who purchased concert tickets and attended. They would buy the DVD to relive the performances. That’s money the artist gets from both ticket sales AND recorded content made from the event.

The fans who couldn’t attend would buy so they can experience the event.

It’s likely that both kinds of fans have ready purchased the recorded music from the artist(s).

It’s like the producer of the concert content says to fans “Remember that awesome experience at the concert? Now, you can remember it even more awesome with this video recording from multiple camera angles and with high definition sound!”.

What a genius hustle. I don’t say that sarcastically. I really think it’s brilliant — the idea of repackaging and publishing content from the content only a select few people were able to consume.

This same model is being done online. One example of someone who’s completely bodying the repackaging of content is Gary Vaynerchuk. He was literally the first person I thought of.

To be clear, I’m not talking specifically about Gary Vee’s content or delivery style; I’m talking about the style he and his team uses to repackage and publish content that’s tailored for specific social media platforms and audiences. I’m talking about the video clips taken from his key note speeches, interviews, or airport vlogs that he publishes to Tiktoks and Instagram Reels. I’m talking about the sound bytes from the same that he publishes to Instagram Stories and mashup videos hosted on his website.

Note: I know Gary Vaynerchuk has a mobile team to capture content for him. I also know that he start in producing content was with talking head videos using a tripod. The oldest video on Gary’s YouTube channel.

The model is already proven, and it’s the smarter Content Creators that are reusing it.
